‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker’s New Horror Short ‘Mama Bear’ Premieres on YouTube Oct. 29: Everything We Know

Most filmmakers who make a half-billion-dollar horror movie never look back at the place they started. Curry Barker is heading straight back to it. The writer-director of Obsession , the $750,000 wish-gone-wrong nightmare that turned into one of the biggest original films of the decade, is premiering a brand-new horror short called Mama Bear on YouTube on Thursday, October 29, two days before Halloween.

It is a small release with big implications. Barker is sitting on a May 2027 Focus Features movie, an A24 Texas Chain Saw Massacre reimagining and an original film at Universal, and he still chose to drop his Halloween project for free on the platform that made him. Below: everything confirmed about Mama Bear , who's in it, how Barker got here, the numbers behind Obsession , and what this move says about where horror's next generation is building its audience.

Watch: The ‘Mama Bear’ Premiere

The premiere page is already live on YouTube under the title "MAMA BEAR (Directed by Curry Barker)," with a reminder button and no synopsis. It goes live Thursday at 11:30 AM Eastern (10:30 AM Central).

The Details: What We Know About ‘Mama Bear’

Here is everything that has been confirmed so far, and it is deliberately not much:

  • Premiere: Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 11:30 AM ET on YouTube, free to watch.
  • Written, directed and edited by: Curry Barker.
  • Partner: Windows. Microsoft's Windows account announced the short on social media with a teaser, and the project is a sponsored release.
  • Cast: Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, Katie Sarife ( Annabelle Comes Home ) as Lacey, Ericka Kreuz as Ms. Wilson and Joshua Snyder as Floyd's doppelgänger.
  • Crew: Vivian Gray, the production designer on Obsession , is back on board.
  • Plot and runtime: Not announced. No synopsis has been released.

That cast list is doing a lot of quiet work. A character credited only as a "doppelgänger" tells you the short is playing with doubles and identity, and anybody who has seen Barker's earlier shorts knows he likes to let a mundane setup curdle slowly before the floor drops out. The title is the other tease. Obsession 's lead character is Baron "Bear" Bailey, so fans are already wondering whether Mama Bear connects to that world. Nothing official says it does, so treat that as fan speculation until Thursday.

Who’s Behind It: From Starbucks Shifts to a Record-Breaker

Barker's origin story is the kind of thing studios now put in pitch decks. He and creative partner Cooper Tomlinson have been making videos together on their channel That's a Bad Idea for roughly a decade, moving between sketch comedy, cringe humor and increasingly ambitious horror. According to the Associated Press, the pair came up through YouTube and TikTok sketches before Barker's horror work started getting noticed.

The turning point was The Chair , a 2023 horror short that passed 10 million views and prompted producer James Harris to suggest turning Barker's ideas into a feature. Then came Milk & Serial , a found-footage feature reportedly made for about $800. When it couldn't land a distributor, Barker posted it free on the channel in August 2024. It went viral and has since passed 3 million views.

Barker's full $800 feature Milk & Serial , posted free on the That's a Bad Idea channel.

The cast of Mama Bear is a mix of familiar faces and Barker's circle. Katie Sarife is the best-known genre name of the group, thanks to her role in Warner Bros.' Annabelle Comes Home. Keeping Obsession production designer Vivian Gray on the team is a signal that this isn't a phone-shot throwaway; Barker is bringing feature-level craft to a free short.

The Backstory: How ‘Obsession’ Changed Everything

Obsession premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 and set off a bidding war. Focus Features won it for a reported $14 million to $15 million, depending on the outlet. Focus opened it in U.S. theaters on May 15, 2026, and the movie did something almost nothing does anymore: it got bigger. The AP noted it kept pulling more than $20 million on several weekends after opening, an unusually long run, and became the biggest hit in Focus Features' history.

The success turned Barker into one of the most sought-after directors in the genre almost overnight. Here's the timeline of what followed:

  • April 22, 2026: Variety reported A24 hired Barker to direct its Texas Chain Saw Massacre reimagining. A24 had won the rights in an auction, beating offers that included one from Blumhouse. Producers include Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, Stuart Manashil, and Exurbia Films' Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and original co-creator Kim Henkel. A separate Texas Chainsaw series is in the works with Glen Powell and director JT Mollner.
  • Summer 2026: Barker told The Hollywood Reporter he wants to "capture the rawness and the grounded-ness of the original," with victims you care about and a focus on the deeply uncomfortable family at the farm, not a guy chasing people with a saw.
  • September 29, 2026: Focus set Anything But Ghosts for May 7, 2027. Barker and Tomlinson co-wrote and co-star as fame-hungry fake ghost hunters who stumble into something real, alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, Violet McGraw and Chris Reinacher. Jason Blum, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath produce through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures and Divide/Conquer.
  • October 19, 2026: Netflix announced Obsession will stream in the U.S. starting November 17. Barker has said Netflix once offered to take the film straight to streaming before it ever reached theaters.
  • October 27, 2026: Windows announces Mama Bear.

Barker also has an original horror film set up at Universal with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, though no details have been shared.

By the Numbers

  • $521.3 million worldwide for Obsession , per The Numbers: $263.5 million domestic and $257.8 million international.
  • $17.2 million domestic opening weekend (May 15 to 17). In other words, the film ended up earning more than 15 times its opening domestically, a ratio blockbusters almost never touch.
  • About $750,000 production budget, per Barker (The Numbers lists it at $1 million). Either way, that's a return of hundreds of times its cost.
  • $800 reported budget for Milk & Serial ; 10 million+ views for The Chair.
  • May 7, 2027: Anything But Ghosts hits theaters. November 17, 2026: Obsession hits Netflix in the U.S.

Analysis: Why a $500 Million Director Is Posting a Free Short

The easy read is that this is a brand deal, and it is one. Windows is paying for a filmmaker with a massive young audience to make something people will actually choose to watch on Halloween week. But the more interesting read is that Barker is protecting the thing that made him valuable in the first place: a direct line to an audience that doesn't wait for a studio to tell it what's coming.

Look at the gap in his calendar. Obsession left theaters months ago, Anything But Ghosts is more than six months out, and Texas Chain Saw hasn't even been scripted, by his own account in the THR interview. Without Mama Bear , his name would be quiet during the single most important week of the horror calendar. With it, he owns a piece of Halloween, primes his audience three weeks before Obsession lands on Netflix, and keeps the channel active for the fans who were watching before Toronto ever was.

He isn't the first creator to make the YouTube-to-studio jump, but he may be the first to refuse to fully leave. Danny and Michael Philippou went from their RackaRacka channel to A24's Talk to Me and Bring Her Back , and the short-to-feature path has a long history in horror, from David F. Sandberg turning his short Lights Out into a studio feature to Kane Parsons taking his Backrooms videos to A24. Most of those filmmakers kept the online work as a résumé once Hollywood called. Barker is treating YouTube as a permanent second stage, and a sponsor is now willing to fund it at a level that lets him bring in his feature collaborators.

There's a risk, of course. A free short from a director whose last movie made half a billion dollars will be judged on a much steeper curve than The Chair was. If Mama Bear feels like an ad, the backlash will be loud and immediate, and brand partnerships in horror have a way of sanding off the edges that made the work exciting. Barker's track record argues against that: he has spent years making scary things with almost no money, and the AP interview found him openly wrestling with impostor syndrome and seeing mostly the flaws in his own work. His advice to young filmmakers was disarmingly simple: "You just got to make it." A filmmaker that self-critical is unlikely to phone in a Halloween short with his name in the title.

For the industry, Mama Bear is another data point that the horror pipeline has flipped. Studios used to discover directors at festivals. Now festivals and studios are often confirming what millions of YouTube viewers already decided. Expect more brands to chase genre creators for October releases, and expect more studios to write "keep your channel" into deals instead of fighting it.

What We Still Don’t Know

  • The plot, the runtime and whether the doppelgänger concept is the whole hook or a twist.
  • Whether Mama Bear connects to Obsession in any way. Barker has said he can imagine more stories built around other characters' wishes, and Anything But Ghosts reportedly exists in the same world, but nothing ties this short to it yet.
  • How visible Windows will be inside the film itself.
  • Whether Barker's next feature after Anything But Ghosts is Texas Chain Saw or his Universal original. He told THR he was still weighing it.

Key dates: Mama Bear premieres October 29, Obsession streams on Netflix in the U.S. from November 17, and Anything But Ghosts opens May 7, 2027.

The Bottom Line

Curry Barker could have spent Halloween week doing victory-lap interviews. Instead he made another scary movie and is giving it away, on the same channel where he once uploaded an $800 feature nobody would buy. That's the most encouraging thing a hot young horror director can do, and it raises the stakes for Thursday.
